Overview

The Electricity Infrastructure and Buildings Division of PNNL is accelerating the transition to a decarbonized, efficient, resilient, and secure energy system through basic and applied research. We leverage a strong technical foundation in power and energy systems and advanced data analytics to drive innovation, transform markets, and shape energy policy.

The Optimization and Control Group within the EIBD seeks a Ph.D. intern to conduct research on modeling and optimization of energy storage. The research focus would be to develop modeling and optimization methods to effectively analyze and optimize energy storage for various applications.

Responsibilities

In order to contribute to these research efforts, a successful candidate would have deep technical expertise in energy system modeling, classical optimization, rich experience in energy storage analytics, and good knowledge of machine learning. The candidate is expected to collaborate effectively with multi-disciplinary research and development teams including researchers within and outside PNNL.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

• Candidates must be currently enrolled/matriculated in a PhD program at an accredited college.

• Minimum GPA of 3.0 is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

• PhD. student in Optimization and Control, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.

• Strong theoretical foundation in optimization and control.

• Expertise in optimization modeling language and various linear/nonlinear solvers.

• Good understanding of power system operation and planning, engineering economics, and power market.

• Research experience in demand response, energy storage and distributed energy resources, and microgrid.

• Research experience in distribution system analysis and ACOPF.

• Expertise in Python, Julia, and MATLAB.

• Strong analytical, task management, and communications skills, both oral and written, and able to communicate clearly the goals, parameters, objectives and outcomes of their research.

To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.
