Location/Division Specific Information

The Clinical Research Intern will be learning the basics of how clinical research is conducted in real-world data collected through patient registries, while supporting our Epidemiology and Biostatistics teams on research projects that include patients with autoimmune diseases. Depending on tract (epidemiology or biostatistics) the intern will be mentored by a Clinical Epidemiologist or Biostatistician. This is a fully remote position.

The goal of this internship it to provide a deeper understanding of all the steps involved in generating meaningful insights using real world data. This includes the design, development and deployment of disease-based registries, approaches to analyzing observational cohorts, and development of publications.

A day in the Life:

The Clinical Research Intern will learn and will play a role in the following functional capacities:

• Complete Human Subject Research Training if not already obtained

• Review basic principles of Epidemiologic research and analysis with mentor (depending on background)

• Review basic principles of Biostatistics with mentor (depending on background)

• Understand how patients are enrolled into each registry, the data collection tools, and follow up plan.

• Participate on weekly research project conference calls, internal meetings, and monthly journal club

• May assist with the setup of new registries, and quality checks of the registry data

• May assist in preparation of research reports summarizing results of statistical analyses, including formatting and filling tables, and reviewing study data for accuracy

• May complete literature searches and retrieve relevant articles

• Based on programming experience or interest may assist Biostats team with the review programs for quality checks and may be asked to learn or test apps that can be used to easily display data

• Perform special projects as they become available

• Other duties and projects as assigned

Keys to Success:

Education

• Attending a University/College working toward a bachelor’s degree or master’s degree in a science, public health, epidemiology, biostatistics, statistics, mathematics or data science, preferred

Experience

• Prior experience in scientific research is preferred

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

• Interest in autoimmune disease, epidemiology, biostatistics, pharmacoepidemiology, or medicine, a plus

• Capable of completing very detailed-oriented tasks

• Good organizational, oral and written communication, and interpersonal skills

• Ability to work as part of a team

• High level of decorum in matters relating to confidential information

• Strong proficiency in the entire Microsoft Office Suite

• Programming experience and/or use of statistical software packages, a plus

• For publications, must remain in contact following the completion of the internship to complete publication-related tasks
